Storyboard Explained

Plot synopsis:

Scene 1: Play drums for the intro until lyrics start, cut on beat to scene two when lyrics start. Use 2 different cameras to film myself playing drums, one eye level in front of the kit being a long/medium shot, the other being positioned on a monopod above my head so an over the shoulder shot is created and can show me playing and hitting the snare drum, sync movements and actions whilst playing the drums to the sounds in the song so it looks like I am playing the song. Finally also use a camera and equipment to track my hands when I play the fast part of the chorus, throughout this sequence constantly cut between each of the cameras.

Scene 2: A close up shot will reveal myself sitting at a desk in the music studio with headphones on testing tracks on a mac, looking at computer screen, camera on desk filming from a high angle, singing “I wish I found some better sounds no ones ever heard”. Then fade to music room next-door fake singing, then look sad, camera at a high angle looking down creating a medium-close up shot, links with lyrics “I wish I had a better voice to sing some better words”. Then cut on beat to me in the same room playing a guitar still looking sad (Medium-close up shot, high angle) “I wish I found some chords in an order that is new” links to those lyrics, then stops playing guitar, leans over to desk writing down rhymes (Over the shoulder shot, followed by close up of paper to see the rhymes that I have written) “I wish I didn’t have to rhyme every time I sang.” Lisping this too. The paper will show a list of lyrics that rhyme.

Scene 3: After writing lyric scene, cuts to transition scene (long-shot at eye level) where I stand in the background of a corridor in school and three extras pass me laughing and having fun whilst I look insecure in the background, links to lyrics “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink but now I’m insecure and I care what people think” cut to next scene.

Scene 4:
Handheld camera filming from a medium-close up shot from a low angle. I slowly walk towards the camera singing “My name’s Blurryface and I care what you think.” The second time I sing this two guys walk past then point and laugh at me from behind, at which point I turn around and see them, turn back look sad into the camera and end by singing “I care what you think” then cover my face with my hands. Fade to black.

Scene 5:
Chorus – (Eye-level, medium shot) Sit on the drum kit looking sad, “wish we could turn back time to the good old days” swinging on chair – childish implications. Then start playing and singing chorus.

Scene 6: Cut at the end of the chorus when the high hat is released to start a new bar of music. Cuts to me on a black background, recorded via a close up at eye level that shows myself looking confused to match the lyrics “How come I can never tell where it’s coming from”. Fade to black then whilst recording with the Canon AXH1, film myself from a medium-close up shot at eye level, lighting a match from complete darkness then lighting a candle, then focus on the lit candle, which will be put on a table, the camera will still be recording at eye level, however once the candle is on the table the shot shall change to a close up. The candlelight will go out after the pause following the lyrics “Probably only sell one.”

Scene 7: This transition to black then leads into the next scene. I shall be in my room looking at a picture of my “brother” and myself, the camera will be positioned so that it records an over the shoulder shot of me looking at the picture, followed by a close up of the picture itself, this connects to the lyrics “Give it to my brother”. (Extreme close up) Slowly zoom into my face then I close my eyes, fade to white, followed by a flashback of the brother and myself skipping stones across a pond, filmed from a long shot at a low angle, then fade back to white. This sequence links to the lyrics “a stone’s throw from creek we used to roam”. Reappears with myself in my room (Camera recording from a high angle) holding the picture sitting at my desk, camera zooms out from my face (Extreme close up transitions to medium-close up recorded from a high angle), I put the picture down, sigh and look sad then sing “but it would remind us of when nothing really mattered…” then continues to record me singing “Out of student loans and tree house homes we all would take the latter” cut to a close up of my bank balance on a computer screen, shows my having no money in my account, cut back to high angle medium-close up position, then my head falls into my hands.

Scene 8: On the 4 beats of the base drum, jump cut to 4 different close ups showing stressful facial expressions of myself, with my head in different positions, moving around sporadically whilst sitting at my desk pulling out hair and screaming etc, camera will be eye-level. Each jump cut will be on beat with the base drum in the song.

Scene 9: cut to another walking transition scene. High angle medium-close up, camera walking backwards whilst I walk towards the camera, two girls pass me point and laugh, they become slightly out of focus then I move right into a new room. Cut on beat.

Scene 10: close up of a Clock on a black background will have its hands going backwards to simulate turning back time. This syncs with the lyrics “Wish we could turn back time.” The camera will be recording at eye-level. Then cut to multiple low angle close up shots of different pictures and achievements of the past (i.e. trophies) filmed using a Canon HG10, and the camera work will be shaky to connote the longing for the past is becoming uncontrollable. These pictures and accomplishments sync with the lyrics “good old days.” Cut on the end of beat after the lyrics “Stressed out” finishes.

Scene 11: Birds eye view of a piece of paper on a desk, the footage will show a name being crossed out and replaced with a new false name, it will resemble an introduction sticker that people wear to introduce themselves. Syncs with lyrics “We used to give each other different names.” Then slide the paper out of shot, and bring in a new piece of paper with a rocket ship drawn on it, it will then be folded into a paper aeroplane the cut to new shot outside, where one camera will show an over the shoulder shot of myself throwing the paper aeroplane, and another camera will be following the flight of the paper aeroplane at a low angle, will be a long shot. This sequence syncs with the lyrics “We would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away.” Cut to myself lying in bed in my room, the camera will be at a high angle looking down at me filming a medium-close up, whilst I sing the words “We used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face” then a close up cut away shot will reveal my mum coming into my room and a POV shot will shot her saying “Wake up you need to make money” which will be synced with the song’s lyrics. Then jump cut twice on the two snare drum beats to show myself rolling over in the bed from a medium-close up. A close up will reveal me lying on my side and the camera becomes eye level with me whilst I sing the verse. When it gets to “Wake up you need to make money” cut back to a close up POV shot of mum saying those lyrics, then camera tracks my movement as I lean up out of bed, I then look directly into the camera (eye-level close up) and say “yeah” to sync with the song as it talks about finally waking up. Then fade to black.

Scene 12: “Wish we could turn back time” Show once again the close ups of the pictures and trophies of the past fade to black, then reveal myself playing drums when the lyrics “but now we’re stressed out” play, it shall reveal a medium-close up of myself aggressively playing the chorus from the same camera locations as the ones in the previous drum sequence, however this sequence will cut more frequently to reflect the aggression. Cut on beat at the end of the chorus to next scene.

Scene 13: Reveals an eye-level close up of myself on a black background, as I slowly look up and make direct eye contact with the camera to show my black contact lenses, then jump cut on beat to a high angle medium shot of myself rocking back and forth whilst being curled up in a ball, not looking at the camera, then jump cut on beat back to the eye-level close up showing sporadic head movements and the effects of stress, possibly screaming, then cut on beat, next shot shows myself slowly pulling up my hands into the shot showing a handful of money, I slowly look down at the money then back up at the camera whilst singing the final chorus, then cut to black. The money prop links to the song’s lyrics saying “wake up you need to make money” as it shows that I have made money but the effects of the stress culminated during the journey to reach this goal are evidently displayed.
