I am going to create a
promotional package for the release of an Alternative Rock project called
‘Blurryface’ by Twenty One Pilots. This will include a promotional music video
for the single, ‘Stressed out’ which is
the band’s most popular song.
To support the release of the
project, I will also be making a digipak to enhance the artistry of the album.
In order to create the digipak I will need to think about the album’s signature
logo and the track list. To complete this effectively, I will research a variety
of digipaks and their meaningful album artworks that have been successful.
The package will also include
a website for the package. In order to make this appeal to my target audience I
will research different websites for inspiration, ideas and initial direction
to see the current conventions of this media platform.
I am targeting my promotional
package at rock fans but also other fans of the sub-genres of rock from the
ages 15-23. In order to appeal to these people, I plan to use a track that is
relatable to this age range. However, the tack is also very conceptual for
those looking for meaningful music, which provokes deep thought. I plan to
create deep layers of meaning within the music video that explore the issue of
mental health, instability and stress. I believe that this is a sensible choice
as I have already analysed the music video of ‘Stressed out’ so I have an idea
of the underlying connotations and key themes that have already been explored
in the video. However, it also enables me to create my own interpretation of
the song whilst including the song’s major themes i.e. Nostalgia.
My research on music videos
has taught me the current convention of rock music videos. My research on ‘Everlong’
has inspired me to include a segment in my music video that is in black and
white to connote Nostalgia and depression. However, It may be that instead of featuring a
section of the video in a monochrome fashion, that I may just use darker
lighting when recording the video to reflect my desired connotations of
Nostalgia and depression. I also plan to include some scenes from the official
music video for ‘Stressed out’ as intertextual references; for instance I plan
to use the shot where the camera is at a low angle and fast paced editing is
used to show the band members childhood pictures to emphasise the past and
feelings of nostalgia. Additionally, I plan to use the bed scene where the
parents shout at the band members however, in my video it shall be used to show
another source of pressure on the lead character and how it slowly becomes too
much for him to the point where he breaks down, highlighting the detrimental effects
of stress and mental instability.
I want to make my music video
relatable to my target audience, as they are aged 15-23 I feel that it would be
appropriate to have one of the filming locations in a school as the majority of
my audience will still be students and will be able to find issues like stress
from school work relatable. The costumes whilst filming in the school should be
school uniforms to reinforce the realism and authenticity of the shoot.
My initial research of rock
music videos has educated me on the two types that exist, ones that are
performance based narratives and the other being a concept based narrative. I
intend to incorporate both styles into one video however; the music video that
I plan to create will be concept-based narrative dominant. There will include
some scenes of myself playing the song on drums. This is also the reason behind
why I shall be the main star in the music video, so I will have to direct
someone so that the recording goes exactly how I envision it. However, I will
have chosen all of the camera equipment, lighting, angle, camera movements and
costumes. Furthermore, my research has also taught me that the lyrics of the
song tend to have a connection to the visuals of the video so I plan to create
a music video that follows this convention whilst adding deeper layers of
meaning through the use of camera techniques, props and colours.
